Broadband Resolutions: Unleashing Greater Promise in 2010
January 8, 2010
Written by: Sarah Versaggi
We rang in the New Year and made our resolutions - but what can
broadband bring to enhance 2010? Already, broadband has revolutionized
the way we communicate, learn, work and play. But there is so much
more in store - from reinvigorating our economy to transforming health
care to keeping us all connected. As highlighted on USTelecom's video wall,
here's a snapshot of the key ways broadband can help in all of these
areas, and how we can unleash greater benefits nationwide with policies
that promote investment and innovation:
Create American Jobs. With job growth a primary national priority, the broadband/IT sectors can play a crucial role. In fact, broadband-enabled jobs are forecast to be among the fastest-growing U.S. occupations over the next 10 years. And they rank among the best paying jobs. U.S. policies should encourage this essential progress.
Improve Our Health (Care). Speeding enhanced health care to all Americans is another essential area in which broadband can help. How so? Already, broadband empowers patients by connecting them to online medical resources; it can also help save the average household 25% of out-of-pocket health care costs. And broadband-driven in-home health monitoring is not only enhancing patients' well-being and quality of life, a full embrace of this technology could also reduce health care expenditures by a net of $197 billion over the next 25 years.
Connect Our Nation. How do we ensure even more Americans connect to broadband-driven opportunities? The fact is 95% of Americans have access to at least one broadband service, but more than half choose not to use it. Let's resolve to have a National Broadband Plan that promotes consumer adoption of this essential modern resource.
Thanks to broadband, these are all tangible resolutions with tremendous real-world impact. Throughout 2010, with pro-growth policies, we will reap the benefits as even more broadband-powered innovations unfold.
