How Broadband Can Help American Workers

In the face of challenging economic times, broadband is uniting American workers online. From job listings to emails sharing the latest employment openings, our latest Broadband Now video discusses the myriad ways the Internet connects us with career opportunities, and how online resources help workers across the nation.
Just how big a draw are Internet employment resources? Nearly half of connected Americans weigh their career options by conducting job searches online. And with many retirees looking for jobs to replenish their nest eggs, traffic on retirementjobs.com doubled from July to November 2008. A true Internet success story and a considerable job resource, Monster.com features over 75 million profiles and ranks among the 20 most popular destinations on the Internet. Meanwhile, professional networking sites have taken off, as evidenced by Linked In, which now has over 30 million members.
What does this mean for businesses? According to a Harris Interactive poll for Career Builder projects, in 2009, as recruitment budgets are downsized, employers will increasingly use online recruitment and social networking sites to find workers. Customized to individuals' interests, geography, and experience, career websites offer an excellent, cost-effective means of matching qualified candidates with job openings.
