With a new President and Congress sworn into office, our latest Broadband Now video discusses the top policy priority of our day -- renewing our nation's economy. In the wake of our country's economic challenges, Congress is working on a stimulus package with a goal of investing in not only our physical infrastructure, but our information economy as well. So just how big a role does broadband play in the U.S. economy?
On a national scale, the broadband and information technology sectors are the largest contributors to the U.S. GDP, adding nearly $900 billion annually to the nation's economy. Also, with many Americans worried about job security, it's encouraging to know that broadband/IT created nearly half of all new jobs last year, and that just a 7% increase in broadband adoption could create 2.4 million U.S. jobs. And thanks to a pro-investment policy climate, broadband infrastructure investment reached $60 billion in 2007 alone. This funding is crucial to unleashing the full potential and power of broadband, including innovations in health IT, online education, and much more.
