One Question for the Candidates

Written by:

An issue largely overlooked by the press this campaign -- but not by the business community -- is the bill that travels under the grand misnomer of the Employee Free Choice Act. What this bill would do is eliminate secret ballot elections in the workplace. When you talk to people about it outside the Washington Beltway, they find it preposterous, and maybe even a mite hilarious. But it garnered over 240 votes in the House this year and has more than 50 votes in the Senate. Only the 60-vote bar in the Senate kept it from passing there.

Tonight's Presidential debate is supposed to be focused on domestic policy and the economy. So let's hope country crooner Bob Schieffer asks the candidates tonight where they stand on the bill that's expected to be H.R. 1 in the House, introduced on Inauguration day. It is a sop to organized labor's hundreds of millions of dollars of their members' money spent in political pursuits out of synch with their members' wishes. No matter, it's just money.

Some great stuff written on this topic by my friends Carter Wood over at ShopFloor.org and Paul Mirengoff at PowerLine. Or, check out the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace site (now who could be opposed to that?!?), where you'll find great videos like this one.

Hey -- is that Johnny Sac....?
