BPA, the Scare du Jour
April 16, 2008
Written by: Pat Cleary
Things are going entirely too well these days what with the Pope's visit and a general feeling of good will embracing the voters of Pennsylvania and people across the land. And so along comes the johnny-come-lately WaPo, blaring the latest scare from the front page, this time something called BPA. No matter that the Today show ran a widely-discredited segment on this last week -- last week -- it merited front-page treatment in the WaPo today. Oh, well, better late than never. My hat is off to the folks whipping up this story. They're doing a great job of scaring the bejesus out of folks. This is like catnip for any journalist, they just can't resist. Fear sells, facts be damned.
Only thing is, you have to go all the way to the jump page, to the 10th paragraph before you see the quote from the guy who oversaw the study saying that there was not enough scientific evidence to rank the possible cancer risk of BPA as a "concern" or a "serious concern." Can't really get a good headline out of that, can you?
In any event, here's a pretty good fact sheet on BPA, in case anybody's interested in the facts. Now can we go back to being afraid of what's under the bed...?
