The 1,624 New York pharmacies that could close as a result of reductions in the Medicaid pharmacy reimbursement rate generate more than 37,000 jobs and over $3.9 million throughout the state's economy. In terms of percentage of pharmacies that could close, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, West Virginia and Alaska round out the top five in terms of being hardest hit.
Not in the top five? Don't celebrate before you look at this study and see how bad your state could have it.
In total, the 11,000-plus pharmacies that could be in jeopardy across the country as a result of pending reimbursements for generic drugs below their cost generate more than 300,000 jobs and $31.1 billion throughout the nation's economy.
We talk about healthcare and the economy as ranking among the top issues facing the U.S. - this is a demonstration that in many ways they are interrelated. Here's hoping Congress addresses the serious issues with the pending Medicaid pharmacy reimbursement cuts this year.
