Buffett against Card Check
March 10, 2009
Written by: Brad Stotler
Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, renounced the Employee Free Choice (EFCA) yesterday during a morning appearance on CNBC, saying passage of the legislation would be a "mistake." Although Buffett endorsed President Obama during the 2008 election, the legendary investor differs with the President on this critical issue that will remove secret ballot elections from the unionizing process after 50 percent of employees publically sign union authorization cards.
"I think the secret ballot's pretty important in the country," said Buffett during the interview. "I'm against card check to make a perfectly flat statement."
ATA concurs with Buffett. A system that does not provide a secret ballot vote to validate the signed authorization cards opens the door to worker intimidation and coercion by union organizers.
Card Check is organized labor's No. 1 priority in the 111th Congress and expected to be introduced this week. The lead House sponsor will be House Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.) and the lead Senate sponsor will be Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.).
