Improving Infrastructure Lays Solid Groundwork

Written by:

As President-elect Obama begins his transition to the White House, improvements in our country's infrastructure continue to be a hot topic on the Hill.

Reminiscent of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Obama has hinted at a stimulus plan that focuses on improving roads, bridges and other infrastructure over the next 10 years. Aside from any special infrastructure program, Obama and the new Congress next year will likely set spending levels for roads and transit when the highway bill comes up for reauthorization.

In a recent The New York Times article, the columnist echoed Obama's sentiments, encouraging readers to consider the importance of a National Mobility project--an investment in the country's infrastructure. He argues that a major initiative would provide more value to our economy than simply funneling more money into institutions.

A commitment to improve and expand infrastructure addresses several short and long-term needs:
  •  The creation of new jobs, helping to account for the more than 1.2 million lost this year
  • Improving transportation flow, which would address growing congestion concerns
  • A greater ability for motor carriers to deliver food and other consumer goods that we rely on
At the annual American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition, ATA President and CEO Bill Graves explained that motor carriers transport more than 70 percent of all manufactured and retail goods in the U.S. Because of this strong reliance on our nation's infrastructure, Graves explained that new legislation to boost spending on U.S. roads, highways and bridges is the most important initiative for the trucking industry in the coming year.
